TAD’s or Temporary Anchorage Devices in Santee, CA

If you suffer from a condition where your upper teeth and lower teeth don’t make physical contact when your mouth is closed, you are suffering from a malocclusion or “bad bite.” Ideally, the upper teeth should overlap the lower teeth a bit when your mouth is closed. About 16% of Americans have this type of bite. There can be several reasons for a malocclusion:

Genetic or skeletal issues

Genetic or skeletal issues are the most common reasons for a bad bite. Your molars have had excessive growth, or your jaw-bones have grown away from one another.

A mixture of baby and adult teeth in your mouth

Poor Oral Habits

Poor habits include thumb sucking, tongue thrusting (a poor swallowing pattern) or tongue forward posture pushing against the teeth when the tongue is at rest.

Patients who have a mix of adult and baby teeth in their mouths will usually self-correct. For all the other conditions, dental intervention is necessary.

Temporary Anchorage Devices, or TAD’s, are used to treat bad bites. They are small screw-like implants made from biocompatible metal that acts as a bone anchor. They are inserted painlessly into the patient’s jawbone in specific places and act as an anchor, or fixed point, to move specific teeth. In most cases, they eliminate the need for head gear or surgery. They are temporary, as the name implies, and are worn for several months during treatment before being removed.

Using TAD’s can also shorten up the overall treatment time. They are easy to install and to remove. The patient is “numbed” as if getting a cavity filled, and only feels a gentle pressure as the implant is installed. Daily maintenance is no more than caring for the rest of your teeth – just gently brush them twice a day.

If you have a bad bite and need treatment, TAD’s may be for you. Call us today and come in for an exam and consultation.
